NYISO launches Market Data Exchange web portal for energy market

Guilderland, NY, Sept. 29, 2003 — The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) will this fall deploy the Market Data Exchange (MDEX), which lends a fresh look to accompany the NYISO’s energy market.

Building on the breadth of information available already at www.nyiso.com, the MDEX will use TIBCO’s PortalBuilder technology, to add easier maneuverability, efficiency and access to NYISO information crucial to trading and participating in New York State’s electricity markets. MDEX is available at mdex.nyiso.com.

A portal is a hub or gateway from which users can locate in one place all the Web content they commonly need by using a Web browser. Portals provide users with the ability to organize information according to their preferences.

Some of the more commonly used portals include My Yahoo and My MSN. In contrast to the one-size-fits-all approach of traditional Web pages, MDEX allows users to choose from a menu of pre-established modules, or portlets, to create their own customized Web page. The NYISO website users will be able to gather all the information they want and disregard the information they don’t need.

To create the new MDEX, the NYISO surveyed energy industry professionals, government officials and the media about what information is most important to them and then created portlets based upon their responses. In addition to the customization feature, MDEX offers state-of-the-art, Google-powered search technology and provides secure Committee information for market participants. MDEX will serve as a communications center for NYISO customers and enhance their ability to navigate through the NYISO website.

“The NYISO’s MDEX will be the foundation for creating a single point of access for Market Participants to interact, trade and communicate with the NYISO. We are excited to offer this service to our customers as we continue our efforts to be a leader in the evolving energy marketplace,” said William J. Museler, NYISO President and CEO.

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO)–www.nyiso.com– is a not-for-profit corporation established in 1999 to facilitate the restructuring of New York State’s electric industry. Based in New York’s Capital Region, in addition to administering the State’s wholesale energy markets, the NYISO operates the State’s high voltage electric transmission system. Since 1999, the NYISO’s market volume exceeded $16.2 billion, more than all of the other Northeast markets combined.
