Editor in chief
I’ve been an editor for a long time and when I first began this career, a monthly magazine was my only channel to provide readers with the most current and relevant information. My, how things have changed.
The printed (or digital) magazine you’re reading now is just one of many resources available to disseminate news and information. Some of you might be familiar with the many types and sources of information POWERGRID International now offers, but some of you might not be. I, therefore, want to fill you in on the various content the editorial team creates for you and let you know where to find it.
POWERGRID International shares a website with Electric Light & Power, a well-known and well-established (94-year-old) brand. The website is updated every weekday with the latest industry news, including stories on regulatory and legal affairs, contract awards, mergers and acquisitions, major projects, new technology, case studies and more. In addition, Online Editor Jeff Postelwait creates an e-newsletter that is deployed bi-weekly, which keeps readers abreast of the latest industry news.
In addition to current news, the website contains exclusive articles that are written for readers of our Electric Light & Power Executive Digest e-Newsletter, which is deployed bi-monthly. Senior Editor Rod Walton recently wrote an article for the Executive Digest that looks back at the 2003 Northeast Blackout. He interviewed several experts who provided not only their views about how and why the blackout occurred but also about what North American utilities and transmission owner/operators have done since the blackout to ensure something similar doesn’t happen again. This story, along with many others from the Executive Digest, are available on power-grid.com.
The website also contains free webcasts/webinars that can be viewed by anyone who visits the site. One of our most recent webcasts titled “OSHA 1910.269 – Layering Do’s and Don’ts,” covered the general principles of layering Flame Resistant/Arc Rated (FR/AR) clothing. You might want to check it out.
The website also contains a “library” of white papers. If there’s a topic that you’d like to learn more about, it’s likely that you can find something on that topic among our white papers. The editorial team also creates short news videos twice weekly, highlighting some of the most interesting recent stories we’ve covered. And, we frequently add photo galleries or “slideshows” that tell stories through photographs.
Utility Products magazine, a sister publication to POWERGRID International, is another great source of information. As the name implies, the magazine covers the latest products, from simple product announcements to in-depth product reviews to case studies. Most of the products are used by individuals working in the field, who build, maintain and repair utility infrastructure-water, electric, gas, cable and fiber optic. Like POWERGRID International’s website, utilityproducts.com includes webcasts, videos, photo galleries and white papers. You might want to check out the latest white paper that describes how Rochester Public Utilities (Minnesota) has shortened recovery and repair time during power and water outages with a new fleet management system.
As you can see from this short rundown, POWERGRID International and its sister media sources Electric Light & Power and Utility Products offer many options to ensure that you’re kept up to date on industry happenings. I hope that if you aren’t already a frequent visitor to these websites, you’ll soon become one so that you can take advantage of all they have to offer.
