Underground, Submersible Distribution Sensor

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Inc. (SEL) announced the release of the SEL-8301 underground distribution sensor, featuring wireless fault location, accurate load data, fault type determination, vault water volume, remote monitoring and the ability to withstand harsh environments including submersion in water up to 15 ft. (4.5 meters) deep. With typical line current measurement accuracy of 1.5 percent and load data readings every 15 minutes, the SEL-8301 allows for more precise switching decisions. Using a wireless Ingenu/Trilliant RPMA network, it sends fault, load current and water depth information to control centers. The flexible design connects up to 12 CTs, allows for monitoring up to four three-phase circuits.

Software as a Service

Siemens has introduced a new Digital Grid Services platform for the U.S. market that will allow utilities to better access an increasingly digital operational environment through the use of cloud and managed service offerings. The offering will consist of software as a service grid management applications offered via a subscription service, managed services including engineering and operations expertise, and cloud-hosted environments via Siemens secure data centers. The solution provides Siemens’ customers with more flexibility for their smart grid deployments and relieves them from the burden of investing in and operating complex software, hardware and networking infrastructure. The Digital Grid Services offering will enhance much of Siemens existing grid portfolio including microgrid software, outage management systems, smart meter systems, and data management, including grid and asset analytics, among others.
