Russian Grids, Russian Railways to make power grid business

Power utility Russian Grids is supporting railroad giant Russian Railways’ intention to create its own power grid distribution company.

Russian Grids’ CEO Oleg Budargin said this would have a positive impact on the cost of services and the reliability of power supplies to consumers.

Russian Railways, which owns over 120,000 power transmission lines, around 1,500 high-tension substations, and over 50,000 distribution substations, said September 27 that it was studying the possibility of setting up an electric power grid business.

Russian Grids was created in 2008 following the reorganization of OAO Unified Energy System of Russia, which controlled some 70 percent of Russia’s electric capacity and 96 percent of its electric power grid.
