Alcatel-Lucent has added new products to its range of 7705 service aggregation routers specifically designed to be deployed in the distribution and field-area network-the part of the network that distributes power to an energy supplier’s residential or business customers. This extends the benefits of IP/MPLS, including service consistency and management, across a utility’s entire communications network, making it smart from end to end. IP/MPLS provides support for teleprotection, supervisory control and data acquisition monitoring and control systems, network distribution automation, advanced smart grid metering and substation automation across the entire smart grid. This greatly simplifies network management, reduces costs and provides increased network security, which ensures outages are efficiently managed and dramatically reduced.
Substation Power Measurement Meter
Electro Industries/GaugeTech announced advanced, new features for the Shark 200 multifunction power and energy meter with data-logging and extensive I/O. Enhanced frequency measurement has been improved to provide accuracy to 0.001 percent. This feature allows the meter to be used for power system frequency analysis and as a high-performance frequency transducer. Additional features include improved real-time clock synchronizing for more accurate load profiling, wider dynamic voltage under-range and more communication port selections. The Shark 200 is used by industries and utilities worldwide to measure and report electrical power. EIG is committed to its many thousands of installed base and offers these features at no additional cost in all new units and as a no-cost firmware upgrade for all existing commissioned units.
Electromagnetic Flow Meter
Several new feature kits for the Badger Meter M2000 electromagnetic flow meter expand communication protocols and provide utility and industrial operations with increased efficiency, cost savings and improved data access. Part of the Badger Meter M-Series family, the M2000 has a record of delivering precise flow measurement for applications from water utility lines to chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and other industrial applications. Its open-flow tube design virtually eliminates pressure loss, and with an advanced, processor-based signal conversion, the M2000 achieves an accuracy rate of ± 0.25 percent. High-density Polyethylene Insulators
Hendrix Molded Products announced its vandal-resistant HPI High-Density Polyethylene insulators. HPI insulators are shatter-resistant when hit, making them an excellent choice for vandal deterrence. In addition, ballistics tests show that even with damage from rifle or shotgun fire, HPI insulators still operate and provide assured reliability. After being subjected to multiple shots at approximately 40 feet with a .308 caliber rifle, 12-gauge buckshot and a 12-gauge deer slug, the insulators still passed wet and dry flashover requirements. In addition, the insulators’ rugged design makes them shatter-resistant when hit with balls, stones or projectiles. This lessens their appeal as targets of vandalism, which helps utilities ensure continued service and reliability.

Power Line Coupling Communication Capacitors
Morgan Technical Ceramics, Ruabon, has new power line coupling communication capacitors that can provide transmission solutions for high-frequency communication signals such as those used to transfer automatic meter-reading information and broadband Internet data. The AC high-voltage capacitor range is designed to operate continuously on 24-kV medium-voltage transmission lines, which can be adapted to carry high-frequency communication signals. Installation of Morgan Technical Ceramics’ power line coupling communication capacitors on the transmission lines will couple and decouple data signals to and from the high-voltage line and protect the data-processing equipment from exposure to high system voltage (50/60 hertz). The products have a high self-resonant frequency that allows them to be used at higher frequency bands. In addition, they have an improved signal-noise ratio when compared with inductive coupled devices.

Fault Current Limiter
AMSC and Nexans’ medium-voltage superconductor fault current limiter (SFCL) solution meets many challenges caused by highly interconnected networks and diversified generation sources. Fault current limiters are one of the key elements in the development of smart grids. The superconductor-enabled fault current limiter offered by Nexans and AMSC is a cost-effective, fast (response time of less than 2 milliseconds) and self-acting system that limits currents to safe, manageable values. The system is passive and typically sits idle and invisible to the grid but can sense and suppress fault currents when they occur, sparing transformers, switchgear and other equipment from damage and protecting the broader power grid. Its ability to sit passively eliminates the losses associated with normal power flow along with many other constraints that are encountered with conventional solutions.
