Siemens opens HVDC transformer factory in China

Guangzhou, China, June 27, 2011 – Siemens Energy has extended its transformer production location in Guangzhou, China, by setting up a new facility for the production of 800-kV converter transformers. The transformer production location in Guangzhou is intended to serve the future needs of the Chinese market and the Asia-Pacific region.

In addition to HVDC transformers, power transformers with ratings up to 1,400 MVA will also be produced at the new facility in Guangzhou. There is a demand for this type of transformer for the expansion of China’s ultra-high-voltage power network.

China is in the process of implementing comprehensive expansion of its power generating capacity and ultra-high-voltage network to be able to meet the country’s increasing power demand in the future.

To meet the market demand for converter transformers with ratings up to 800 kV and power transformers up to 1,400 MVA, Siemens has extended its transformer production location in Guangzhou.

As part of extension of the production location, a test center for high-rating power transformers has been built in addition to the new production facility. The extension also included the construction of a final assembly shop, in which a desert-like climate prevails: ten percent humidity at a temperature of about 28°C.

This avoids the ingress of humidity from the air into the insulation of the transformer. These new facilities provide the basis for cost-effective high-quality production of high-rating transformers for the ambitious power transmission projects in China. The production facility’s vicinity to the Pearl River with its inland ports also makes it possible to dispatch the high-rating transformers by ship. These often weigh several hundred tons.

At the transformer production location in Guangzhou, Siemens Transformer (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd., a joint venture of Siemens and Guangzhou Electric Equipment Group, had to date produced power transformers with ratings up to 500-kV rated voltage, oil-insulated distribution transformers with ratings up to 8 MVA, and cast-resin transformers up to 4 MVA at the manufacturing location in Guangzhou with a work force of 700.
