WSI announces new power outage forecast service

BILLERICA, Mass., Jan. 30, 2003 — WSI on Thursday announced the release of Energycast Alert! with the Power Disruption Index (PDI). This new product provides Transmission and Distribution companies with specific power outage forecasts by service area.

“The Power Disruption Index will redefine the way energy companies look at the weather’s impact on their transmission grid. These forecasts will enable energy providers to anticipate outages sooner, line up crews faster, and reduce unplanned costs,” states Jim Menard, Vice President for Energy at WSI.

Weather related power outages cost Transmission and Distribution companies millions of dollars each year. Today companies routinely monitor weather data and forecasts, yet each T&D company then needs to interpret that weather information and subjectively determine if the expected weather will cause outages in their service area. WSI Energycast Alert! does the work of translating weather information into power outage forecasts.

“Icing, tropical storms, high winds, and lightning are a constant source of trouble for our operations. WSI has worked closely with us to help translate weather data into power outage projections” states Bill Howell, Jr., Director of System Outage Response for Entergy Corporation.

WSI, known for it’s weather forecasting infrastructure and experience providing energy companies with weather information, has worked closely with several of the nations largest utilities to better understand the correlations between weather and power outages. As a result of this research, WSI created the Power Disruption Index (PDI), which provides customers a fast, effective way to prepare for weather induced power outages.

Energycast Alert! With the Power Disruption Index (PDI) is a satellite delivered service, which is easily connected to a client’s intranet. The service is easily viewed using a frames capable browser. WSI augments this service with options such as live storm support, alerts, and a suite of storm graphics.
